Technically speaking it was really Lennon who first broke up with the band. John said that he was leaving the Beatles but don't let the press know. Paul then called up a press conference saying that he was leaving the Beatles which infuriated John.

The song Instant Karma was one of the fastest song to be written, recorded and released. John recorded the song on the same day he wrote it and after 10 days it was released. John was quoted saying that he wrote during breakfast, recorded it during lunch and released it during dinner.
